Ocasio-Cortez: It's "totally unacceptable", congressional salaries are not put out

Elected Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blamed the fact that congressional legislators continue to be paid in the event of a government shutdown.

"When the next government closes, congressional salaries should also be paid. It is totally unacceptable that members of Congress can impose a government closure on partisan lines and that Congressional salaries be exempted from this decision, "she tweeted on Saturday. "Have some integrity."

His post comes on the first day of a partially blocked government because of the legislator's inability to pass a budget while President Trump was seeking funding at the border.

CNBC notes that the closure is expected to affect more than 420,000 federal employees who will continue to work with deferred payments such as law enforcement and approximately 380,000 workers who will not be paid for time lost such as the NASA staff.

Ocasio-Cortez has already mentioned the question of congressional salaries.

Around the time of the Obama administration's closure in 2013, the Washington Post explained why legislators are exempt from any fiscal crisis: "The government's closure only concerns agencies and employees funded by annual appropriations. . But this does not apply to members of Congress. The salaries of members of the House and Senate are inscribed in the permanent law. "

At the time, some legislators had offered to donate their wages during the closed period in solidarity with other federal workers.
