The Democratic Representative of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, New York, fought back against Republican lawmakers.

"More than 200 members voted for Nancy Pelosi today, but the government only drank one: me," said Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter ]. "Do not hate me because you are not me, guys."

The incident at Capitol Hill occurred around 1:30 pm when the House of Representatives, including the 100 or so newly elected legislators, voted for the next speaker. When Ocasio-Cortez voiced his vote verbally, a sound that sounded like "boo" was heard in the chamber of the House.

The video of C-SPAN does not clearly say who made the noise in the room where the spouses and children of the members of the congress were. However, Michael Barbaro, host of the New York Times' "The Daily" podcast, said in a tweet that Republicans "shamefully and playfully" booed Ocasio-Cortez.

After the noise, Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow Democrats around her take a look at her direction and burst out laughing. The Ocasio-Cortez office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday night.

Ocasio-Cortez, who became the youngest woman elected to the House, was seen by many as a rising star in politics. Conservative figures have since targeted her views as a democratic socialist – and she often responds with jokes about social media.

Democrats now have a majority in the House of Representatives and Pelosi was elected president in a vote by 220 votes to 430, winning the victory over Republican Representative Kevin McCarthy of California. Fifteen Democrats broke away from the party and chose not to vote for Pelosi.

Pelosi's re-election briefly appeared to be in question after the mid-term elections, after many Democrats in the House called for new leadership before the new Congress. Ocasio-Cortez, who lobbied Pelosi about the change of government, said she would support Pelosi's bid if she "remains the most progressive candidate for the presidency".
