In a statement, Chris Peterson said that redesigning YouTube with Polymer largely depends on the old Shadow DOM v0 API, available only in Chrome. As a result, this significantly affects the performance of the service in other browsers.
YouTube supports the DOM Shadow to work in Firefox and Edge, and, surprisingly, it runs slower than the built-in implementation in Chrome. On my laptop, loading the initial page takes 5 seconds with this tool and only 1 – without it. The navigation on the pages is the same,
– Peterson pointed out.
He noted that Edge and Firefox users can use third-party extensions that launch YouTube without Polymer, and at the same time increase the speed of the site. You can also use an outdated version of YouTube available in Internet Explorer 11 and other legacy browsers.
It should be noted that Google has not yet responded to this alert.
