Police broadcast surveillance video on car hijacking as search continues for escaped prisoner in San Quentin

UPDATE (8:49 pm) – The San Rafael Police Department released a surveillance video of a carjacking, allegedly carried out by an escaped prisoner from San Quentin State Prison.

The video was taken around 9:15. pm Wednesday in the parking lot of Home Depot on Shoreline Parkway in San Rafael

The victim told the police that a man had approached her, had threatened to kill her and then had asked for the keys of his car. She added that the man had waved under his shirt as if he had a gun or a pistol.

While police were investigating the car hijacking, the police department was informed that a prisoner had escaped from San Quentin, nearby. The description of the prisoner corresponds to that of the car hijacker and the Home Depot is located less than 1.5 km from the prison. The police said it had led them to believe that the escaped prisoner, Shalom Mendoza, may have been the car's hijacker.

The stolen vehicle was a Toyota Rav4 silver sport utility vehicle with the California registration number "6STZ502". a work team at the prison.


UPDATE (11:25) – California authorities have announced that an inmate escaped from the state prison of San Quentin suspected of "stalking". a car theft had left an unfenced minimum security dormitory located outside the prison walls.

Robert Gardea said on Thursday that officials were still looking for 21-year-old Shalom Mendoza. He was last seen in the prison before 6 pm Wednesday and disappeared after 21:30.

San Rafael police say Mendoza allegedly stole the victim from a parking lot next to The Home Depot after 9:00 pm.


(2:46 pm) – The officials of the state prison of San Quentin are asking the public to help him locate an inmate who escaped.

California Corrections and Rehabilitation Department officials said Shalom Mendoza, 21, was reported missing at approximately 9:35 pm Wednesday during a settlement count. Subsequent research confirmed the disappearance of the detainee.

According to officials, Mendoza allegedly drove a motorist near the prison driving a Toyota Rav4 with a California license plate bearing plate number 6STZ502.

Mendoza is described as a Hispanic man with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighs 177 pounds.

The CDRC indicates that Mendoza arrived at the Los Angeles County State Prison in December 2017. He is sentenced to five years in prison for using a deadly weapon during a carjack attempt . and avoid or attempt to escape a peace officer by driving recklessly.
