Officer Aaron Wright recovered it – but for a fraction of a second, the wrong way. Published body camera images show that the Indiana officer opened fire on fellow countryman Lane Butler in an apparent accident on Tuesday, reported ABC News. Three officers were searching a Lafayette home looking for a wanted suspect under a arrest warrant when they stumbled upon a big barking dog that triggered a chaotic moment . According to media reports, the 107-pound dog, considered a Cane Corso, was pushing out of a cage or jumping on Wright. But, according to the Journal & Courier Wright collapsed closing the door of the cage while Butler was quickly heading for the front door of the house. It is at this point that Wright's gun is unloaded.
Her ball hit Butler on the left shoulder and she fell on the sidewalk swearing. "What happened?" a male officer said. Officers quickly call for medical help and Butler is in an ambulance in 2 and a half minutes. Chief of Police Pat Flannelly said Friday that Wright took full responsibility for what had happened and was devastated. While officers learn to keep their fingers on the trigger and weapons, whether against the chest or in a "ready for use" position, Flannelly says that Wright's weapon was "twisted to the hand "when the dog started to come out of the cage. An internal investigation considered that it was an accident and Wright will be allowed to return to work on Monday. WRTV Indianapolis says the three-year veteran remains hospitalized in a serious but stable condition. (In Arkansas, a sheriff's deputy was "removed from office" for shooting a dog.)
