In Poland, near the Supreme Court building, mass demonstrations took place on July 3 and 4 for independent tribunals . Mass meetings have come out of the street due to the coming into force of the Law on Judicial Reform, which, according to the participants of the actions, contradicts the Constitution. The newspaper Wyborcza reports.
The protesters spent the night in a courthouse to greet the judges and the head of the Supreme Court, Malgorzata Gersdorf, in the morning. People greeted them with applause and chanted "Constitution", "Free Judgments". They also launched banners with the slogan "Leave".
The judicial reform, led by the ruling nationalist party "Right and Justice" in Poland, has been strongly criticized by the EU. In Brussels, it is thought that it will put an end to the independence of the judiciary. The change in the judicial system implies that a significant portion of the judges of the country's Supreme Court should retire.
Reminder, Judicial Reform came into force on July 3. On July 22, the Polish Senate confirmed the Supreme Court law despite criticism and protests from the EU. According to the reform, the Supreme Court will be subordinate to the Ministry of Justice, and the government will have more influence on the appointment of court presidents.
