In the last parliamentary elections in the region, three parties advocating the independence of Catalonia received more than half of the 135 parliamentary seats in the new parliament. The most popular vote was the Citizen Party, which advocated the unity of the region with Spain.

The political crisis in Catalonia began on October 1, 2017, when the referendum on the independence of Spain was banned in the region by the authorities of Madrid. According to the Catalan authorities, more than 90% of those who participated supported the independence of the region.
