The Trial included testimonials from doctors as well as other neighbors, but the most fascinating testimonials came from Paul and Boucher. Paul, a former GOP presidential candidate, told the jury on Monday that immediately after the attack, "I thought I could never get up from this lawn again."
An excused, Boucher, acknowledged that he was not thinking rationally and he called "two minutes of my life, I would like to be able to resume." Paul did not show any outside emotion, sitting between his lawyer and his wife in the courtroom, while Boucher was telling the attack.
In his lawsuit, Paul claimed up to $ 500,000 in compensatory damages and up to $ 1 million in punitive damages. Baker had conceded that a "reasonable sentence" could be helpful for Paul's pain and suffering, but said that no punitive relief should be granted. Baker said Paul had resumed his "usual way of life," which included golf and a ski vacation.
Boucher has already served a 30-day prison sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting a congressman. Federal prosecutors appealed, saying 21 months would have been appropriate. Boucher was also fined $ 10,000 and 100 hours of community service in the criminal case.
Paul and Boucher both recounted in great detail their account of the attack.
Paul testified that he had left his lawnmower to take a car. stick and stood up when Boucher hit him with such force that the two flew in the air, between 1.5 and 3 meters (1965)
For a moment, Paul said that he had a flashback to the shooting of 2017 at the baseball field when congressmen practiced for a match. Steve Scalise, representative of Louisiana, was seriously injured during the shooting.
The attack in Paul's court was motivated by the concern of the lawn and not by politics.
Boucher told the jury that he had attacked Paul after seeing the senator form a pile of paintbrushes.
On the eve of the attack, Boucher had said that he had burned another pile of scrub created by Paul near the border. He sprayed this fuel cell and set it on fire, Boucher said. An explosion burned his face, neck and arms. Boucher said that he was still suffering a lot when he attacked Paul the next day. Boucher stated that he had evacuated the piles of brushes accumulated by Paul without asking the senator.
