At the beginning of the year in Kiev, a number of containers were installed for the collection of hazardous waste – batteries, thermometers and energy saving lamps.
Where to rent in Kiev
The list and contact details of hazardous waste containers collected in Kiev are published on the corresponding website. They are intended only for the collection of used batteries undamaged by mercury thermometers and energy saving lamps .
Deputy Director of the Kiev Service, Vyacheslav Savitsky, commented on channel 24, that there are currently in the capital 139 special containers for waste collection. On the rest of the city, there are only 150, but the other 11 – the "exchange fund" in case one of the containers breaks and should be replaced. Each of them is divided into three distinct divisions: for the collection of batteries, lamps and thermometers. All are of different size. For the year 2019-2021, they plan to buy 300 additional containers of this type.
139 containers for the collection of hazardous waste were installed in Kiev
According to Vyacheslav Savitsky, container waste is disposed of daily, almost daily. However, in winter, there is less accumulation of waste, in summer, much more, especially in the center of the city.
The container service, the collection and temporary storage of waste, including hazardous waste, are included in utility rates . . That is to say that it works at the expense of the inhabitants of the city.
Where are hazardous wastes stored?
KP Kievkommunserv containers represent all the waste transported temporarily to the warehouse, which is in the balance of the business. According to Vyacheslav Savitsky, the premises are located "in a safe area of Kiev". There is a mode of high security, the territory is protected
"All waste is weighed at the entrance, recorded in the newspaper. No battery can be removed," said Savitsky
. All batteries collected, which currently exceed 50
If we speak of thermometers and lamps, choose by auction the companies (in Ukraine) for which Kievkommunservis uses this waste to exploit them. Last year, about 10,000 energy saving lamps were collected.
However, no company in Ukraine would take care of recycling and disposal of batteries. Therefore, in the case of KP Kievkommunservis, they are transported to a specially arranged temporary warehouse and await their dispatch abroad, in particular to Poland, for processing. Savitsky says that representatives of the Polish factory were already arriving in Ukraine, negotiating how to make the transport as safe as possible and what it needed. Vyacheslav Savitsky adds that Ukraine does not yet have cross-border shipments of hazardous waste and that Kiev wants to be the first to do so. Thus, by the end of 2019, the system should win, given all the technical and legal problems.
The batteries are not eliminated in Ukraine
Savitsky explains that the installation in Ukraine of separate power supply units intended solely for the reprocessing of batteries is not profitable. But if this company will cover the consumer market not only batteries, but also electronic and electrical appliances, and will work in several major cities, in order to have enough raw materials, this can be achieved. The transport of waste outside of Ukraine is not only more expensive, but also more difficult to legalize.
In the organization "Batteries, give yourself", explain that the professional recycling of batteries in Ukraine is now impossible for two reasons :
– in Ukraine, they collect today 30 times less batteries than the minimum recyclers – a factory in Europe to make their production profitable; –
– we have no law that requires battery manufacturers to fund their treatment; manufacturers.

only serious way to recycle batteries from Ukraine a few years – sends to Europe, especially Redux plants in Germany and Poland Recupyl. Now, as indicated by the organization "Batteries, Give it", we are at the final signing stage of the contracts. The entire procedure will last 9 months. The first two cars (40 tons) of batteries will be sent for recycling (1 wagon per plant) around the end of 2019. In the warehouses of the organization have accumulated more than 60 tons of batteries their treatment will cost more than three million hryvnia. So now, batteries are only accepted by companies that cover the cost of recycling them in Europe.
In Ukraine, two networks have officially confirmed their intention to finance the recycling of their collected batteries, Watsons and Epicenter.
How to control the collection of waste?
If the raw material is not properly sorted, the treatment procedure becomes more expensive and, therefore, less profitable. and the recovery of the project. For the moment it is often necessary to re-sort because hazardous waste containers contain objects that are not. Or, people (deliberately or not) are confused with the ballot boxes and, say, throw the batteries into a hole for the lamps. According to Vyacheslav Savitsky, it is difficult to control this – it is necessary to wait until the attitude of Ukrainians in this regard changes.
"We now have a lot of shameful cases, when not only are these containers destroyed, but also, for example, where the batteries – emit leftover food, where the bulbs are ejected by batteries, where the thermometers emit everything What happens is that there are even cases where the car approaches and, in the words of the guardian, they break the containers and take them with them. 90%, everything depends on our conscience . control, where the neighbor did t The hermetic meter, whoever threw a cheburek or a cigar into the container, is unrealistic and installing a camera is expensive, knowing that our containers are destroyed, expensive equipment will also be in danger. We still have time, it takes time, ie the conscience of the Ukrainians

Hazardous waste also includes: household appliances and electronic appliances, lubricating machine, medicine, liquid chemistry . They should be collected in separate containers with lids and delivered for disposal, which is payable today. In general, throw garbage can not in any case . Companies in major Ukrainian cities provide hazardous waste disposal services, but it is important to check the permissions and the necessary documents to avoid falling into the fraudsters. In particular, companies must have an active license to treat hazardous waste of a certain class. The list of approved companies is on the website of the Ministry of Ecology
The program on hazardous waste management was one of the first to operate in Lviv – it There are currently around 200 relevant waste collection points.
In the use of electrical and electronic equipment is managed in particular by the waste management center. Each device is disassembled into components and sorted according to the types of materials, of which 80% on average are recycled in specialized companies.

Cost of maintenance depends on several factors: specification, volume and location of recycling facilities . For legal entities, the disposal of hazardous waste is mandatory. With the population, the company is currently working on preferential terms – the technique is supported, the lamps are sold at a reduced cost.

According to Marianne Terentyeva, a specialist in waste management. the number of people and businesses seeking to dispose of civilized hazardous waste is increasing every year. Similarly, the total mass of electronic devices, batteries and other recycled household waste that needs to be recycled is also increasing
So, now in Ukraine, the delays are mainly due to affordable and convenient infrastructure for the population .

Why hazardous waste has to be eliminated
About 260 tonnes of manganese compounds, half a tonne of mercury and a quarter of a ton of cadmium are injected each year with waste. A battery, as shown by the scientists of the "Lvivska Polytechnika" National University, can pollute 16 square meters of land – it no longer grows. And in Ukraine, 99% of all batteries (about 160 million pieces a year) are still thrown uncontrollably into the ground.
According to a report presented to the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2016 the amount of electronic waste worldwide, 44.7 million tons, the weight of 4.5 000 Eiffel towers. By 2018, it has already reached 48.5 million tons. This figure is expected to reach 120 million tons in 2050 .
Although electronic waste accounts for only 2% of all solid waste in the world, it accounts for 70% of toxic waste. Today, only about 20% of this waste is properly recycled. Most of them are in landfills, are burned or sold and processed illegally. The cost of electronic waste that humanity throws away each year is estimated at $ 62.5 billion.
