U.S. Rep. John Lewis was hospitalized Saturday after falling ill on a flight to Atlanta.

The 78-year-old civil rights hero was on a Detroit flight Saturday when he began to feel dizzy and sweaty, an assistant said.

He was then hospitalized for "routine observation" in Atlanta. "He is resting comfortably and expecting to be released tomorrow," the Democratic Bureau said in a statement Saturday night

Lewis is known as a central figure in the civil rights movement.

Later, he became a student activist, taking part in the Nashville sit-ins, 1961 Freedom Rides, on March 1963 in Washington and the bloody Sunday, March 1965, where he was beaten in the skull by a soldier state at Selma, Alabama. Lewis has represented Georgia's 5th Congressional District since 1987.
