Thus, in June, countries conducted five experiments on the impact on the ionosphere. As stated, ions are essential in radio communications. As a result, scientists and authorities can theoretically amplify or block radio signals over long distances by influencing this layer of the atmosphere.

As the publication points out, even previous experiences have had extraordinary consequences. In one of them, the surface of the ionosphere "victim" reached nearly 130 000 km 2. In another, this layer of atmosphere managed to heat up to 100 degrees Celsius. The heating was carried out 500 km from the city of Vassilsursk in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia

The participants affirm that the study is purely scientific and harmless for the atmosphere. "We do not play God," said the researcher who wanted to remain anonymous in an interview with South China Morning Post.

The results were published in the Chinese scientific journal Earth and Planetary Physics. They were judged "satisfactory". However, other experts have noted that such cooperation was rather unusual, because "a very sensitive technology is involved".
