Salt Lake Valley could have a white Christmas. Well, maybe white-ish.

If you dream of a white Christmas, you can hope that your dream will come true.

This is not safe, but the National Meteorological Service predicts a good chance that it is snowing in the air – although it is probably only after opening the gifts. And if it will officially be a white Christmas as defined by the NWS – at least an inch of snow on the ground – is at best dubious.

There should be light snow on Monday in northern Utah late in the day, according to the NWS. We expect little accumulation, although the roads are wet.

A second storm should begin the night of Christmas Eve and continue until Christmas morning. There will be an accumulation in some areas – mostly above 5500 feet elevation – but the rain will melt with the snow when temperatures reach their lowest level in the 40's. Precipitation will return to snow in the evening , while temperatures drop below the freezing point.

According to the NWS, Salt Lake City has often had white Christmas in the last 90 years, but not much more often. Between 1928 and 2017, 49 times (54%) in total, the capital of Utah had at least an inch of snow on the ground on December 25th.
