Newtown, Conn. – Students at Sandy Hook Elementary School were sent home after the day a bomb threat forced an evacuation for the sixth anniversary of the massacre that killed 20 schoolchildren first year and six educators. Newtown police said the threat was made around 9 am Friday and the school was evacuated.
The threat was not deemed credible, reported CBS Hartford's subsidiary, WFSB-TV.
Aaron Bahamonde said that there was great anxiety in the city on the occasion of the anniversary and that the school superintendent had decided to cancel classes remaining.
"While the sweeping of the school had been done by officers, it had been decided on teachers and students, it would be better to send them back for the day instead of allowing them to resume the day", said the police.
WFSB-TV. Law enforcement officials said the many bomb threats were not credible.
The school where the shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 was destroyed and a new building was built on the same site. Moments of silence were observed Friday morning in Newtown and other places in memory of the victims.
