For reasons still unknown, the shooter was shot in the head at the head of Jazmine Barnes, while she was riding in her mother's car. The devastating circumstances surrounding the girl's death have united the Houston area in confusion and grief.
"We think it was totally unprovoked, no matter what it was, and we are not neglecting anything," Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez told reporters. "We will leave all the possible motivations."
Jazmine was still in her pajamas on Sunday morning when she and her mother, LaPorsha Washington, went to have coffee before dawn in a convenience store. Jazmine's three sisters were at the back.
It was about 7 o'clock in the morning. The family got up early because Washington's mother was visiting. They were already looking forward to preparing Sunday dinner.
But while the family was driving near a Walmart, a man in a red or brown pickup truck approached their car and started firing, said the sheriff's office.
"I did not provoke it in any way," said the mother.
Gonzalez clarified that the suspect was a white man, about forty years old, who was wearing a beard and was driving a red truck.
Washington says that she suspects that the attack may have been motivated by racial considerations. She said that she did not have tinted windows and that the shooter could see "a black mother with four beautiful children, girls, in this car".
The sheriff also stated that the mother and her four daughters did not seem to have done anything to induce the truck driver.
"There was no indication that the family made any mistakes," said Gonzalez. "They were just driving down the service lane when it happened to them."
The sheriff's department asks anyone with a video surveillance near Wallisville Road and E. Sam Houston Parkway to check their images for clues.
Even for officers accustomed to horrendous crimes, the tragedy of Jazmine 's death had a profound impact on the forces of order.
And for Gonzalez, the mission to find the murderer of Jazmine became personal.
"We are very committed and we will not let We are extremely upset by this," said the sheriff.
"We will not rest until the murderer of this precious child is brought to justice."
