Skoda's weekly campaign for the promotion of the European compact crossover continued this week with a second episode in which the name of the model could be found.
The B-segment model was not named the Vision X concept introduced last year. A word starting with "K" and ending with "Q", like any other cross between Karoq and Kodiaq. Skoda has decided to name the model "Kamiq" – a name that the brand uses in China for another compact crossover since 2018. The model (shown below) is manufactured in a factory in the Chinese city of Nanjing and has already been sold to 27,900 units last year.
Despite the same name, the European version will receive a different design to better respond to the European market. The sketchbook of the skoda suggests that the production version will remain faithful to the aforementioned Vision X concept, which means the presence of a separate lighthouse. The Chinese Kamiq has a pair of traditional style headlamps, but there is a good chance that the Euro-Kamiq is different, just as Octavia for Europe is different from the version for China.
A new Skoda car (such as the Volkswagen T-Cross and SEAT Arona) is a new city-based crossover, created on VW's MQB platform and debuting at the beginning of March 2019 at the Salon of the Geneva automobile. It's too early to talk about price, but it should surprise VW fans by offering a more spacious lounge and many "smart" features that can be expected from Skoda.
The general picture is already clear enough, we can assume that the version of Skoda Kamiq will have a TSI engine of 1.0 liter or 1.5 liter three-cylinder, as well as German and Spanish analogues. It remains to be seen whether the 1.6 TDI will appear, but this can happen because the other two Skoda crossovers are available with a diesel engine.
