Sony, one of the largest manufacturers of photographic modules for smartphones, introduced the new CMOS sensor called IMX586

According to published specifications, IMX586 has received the world's smallest pixels – just 0.8 micrometers. This will allow you to capture images with a resolution of 8000×6000 (48 megapixels) in a standard 1/2 module with a diagonal of 8 mm.

Normally, reducing the pixel size negatively affects the quality of the shooting, because it gets less light. But Sony engineers have found ways around this limitation, thanks to the pixel layout called Quad Bayer. The four neighboring pixels have the same color – in low light conditions, their signal is combined, allowing you to receive bright, high-quality images with low noise. However, with this resolution the image shrinks from 48 to 12 megapixels.
