A St. Louis police officer was indicted for manslaughter Friday for shooting a colleague while they were were playing Russian roulette, authorities announced.

Agent Nathaniel Hendren, 29 years old The 24-year-old officer Katlyn Alix, was shot dead in his apartment. Carondelet district on Thursday morning in the presence of a third policeman, police said.

Hendren was charged with manslaughter and armed criminal acts. If he is found guilty, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Alix was on leave at the time of the shooting, the police said. Hendren and his partner were on duty. The three men were in Hendren's apartment shortly before 1am.

Hendren took out all the bullets from a revolver and then handed one, the police said in a statement of probable cause.

Alix then took the gun, pointed it at Hendren and pulled the trigger without firing a shot, the police said.

Hendren took the gun and pulled the trigger.

"While [Hendren’s partner] was leaving the room, but before leaving the apartment, he heard a shot," said the police.

Hendren and his partner used a police radio to report an officer in need of assistance and took Alix to the Saint-Louis University Hospital. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Police said Thursday that a preliminary investigation had revealed that Hendren had "abused" the weapon. Police Commissioner John W. Hayden Jr. described it as "accidental discharge of the weapon".

The gun was found on the scene, police said. They did not specify whether it was a service weapon or the reason why Hendren and his partner were in the apartment during their shift.

Alix joined the St. Louis Police Academy in June 2016 and was appointed police officer two years ago. She was posted as a patrol in the south of St. Louis. She leaves to mourn her husband, mother, father and sister.

Hendren has been in the department for about a year, police said. His partner, also 29, has been working for the St. Lawrence Police Department for almost two years.
