Five children aged 5 to 15 years died in a single-vehicle accident Saturday in Maryland, the national police said.
In a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica taking Route 301 northbound, in Prince George County, for unknown reasons, she came off the road and struck several trees, police said. State of Maryland in a statement. The fire department informed police of the state of the accident shortly before 5 am
The children who had been ejected at the time of the accident had been identified by the state police as being Paris Dixon, 5, and London Dixon, 8, of Bowie, Maryland; and Rickelle Ricks, age 6, Zion Beard, age 14, and Damari Herald, age 15, from Washington.
The driver, Dominique R. Taylor, 32, of Bowie, and passenger Cornell D. Simon, 23, of Oxon Hill, Maryland
Taylor is the mother of two of the children, said the state police.
The investigators believe that, on the basis of preliminary evidence, both adults were wearing seatbelts, but all five children. According to state police, passengers sitting at the back were not properly restrained at the time of the accident.
The vehicle struck several trees and started skating in a snowy field after deviating from the left side of the road. , said the state police.
The cause of the accident was not determined, police said. Roads throughout the state were icy, reported NBC Washington.
"Every collision where we lose life is a tragedy," said Captain Daniel Pickett, a soldier from the state of Maryland, according to the station. "And where children are involved, it's more of a tragedy."
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan tweeted "Deeply saddened by this tragic car accident in Prince George County, pray for all involved, including the first responders."
