MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (WCAX) Police now claim that two students helped them unravel a shooting plot at an alleged school at Middlebury Union Middle School.

Teenagers played a role in the repression of the threat. while speaking. It is this kind of initiative and reporting that the police and the school director have declared wanting to see more in the community.

Superintendent of the School, Peter Burrows, is proud of the two students who helped police stop the planned shooting.

"The students talk to each other, get closer to us, and then allow us to work with the police and take care of them, that's huge," Burrows said.

Police were able to begin their investigation on Saturday when a student told rumors to a parent. Another student later provided the police with specific information about the suspects.

"We absolutely need brave and strong individuals who come forward and tell us about what's going on," Det. Kristine Bowdish said

"The fact that they recognize that this is a problem is excellent," said Gail Isenberg, a member of the community.

Some people shopping in Middlebury have said that the heroic deeds of the students testify to a federal campaign.

"I think advertising around" seeing something, saying something "is probably paying off and I think Florida students have set a good example for people to be more aware that they have the responsibility for their own protection, "said a community member, Richard Isenberg

The police encourage everyone to remain vigilant, even if you hear information or jokes

" There are Thirty or forty years ago, it may not have been serious or these conversations anyway, "said Middlebury Police Chief Tom Hanley. "Today, with the events that have occurred, we take it all seriously – you know, it's no longer a slamming of the knees."

We will probably never know more about the students behind the alleged conspiracy or what is being done for

Police questioned 10 students over the weekend in the hope to end the plot after a tip given by a student Saturday.

"The information was vague and a lot of information, some were somehow a joke."

The breakthrough occurred when another student came forward Monday with specific details like the name of the target and that the shooting was scheduled for Tuesday at noon. The police could question the student who would have been at the origin of the threat. This student was then detained by the DCF and received psychiatric counseling. Another student who offered to provide firearms was not in school either on Wednesday.

"The case we are talking about today is about minors, so there are a lot of things we can not talk about," Hanley said. [19659005] Any charge in this case would likely be heard by a family court where all proceedings are confidential.

What happens when these suspects remain anonymous and return to school, Middlebury or elsewhere?

Student records follow them if there are any disciplinary measures. This is common in all school districts across the country, "said Burrows.

Some members of the community told WCAX News that they did not mind that the children involved in the plot remained anonymous. [19659005] "To be labeled and have that reputation at a young age … hopefully they'll get some valuable help," said Bobbi Loney, a member of the community.

"Juvenile laws are meant to protect students who can do impulsive things as minors and not prejudge them as adults," Richard Isenberg said.

The police say she's watching the situation and hopes these kids take advantage of the opportunity to turn the pages.
