Texas shooting at the house that left 5 dead was probably murder-suicide, police say

A 60-year-old man shot and killed his father and stepmother in a Texas retirement home on Friday after killing two other people in the couple's home nearby, officials said.

Richard Starry, an armed man died inside a room of the Retama Manor Nursing Center in Robstown, alongside his father and 85-year-old mother-in-law, Chief Erasmo Flores of the Robstown Police Department said at a press conference Saturday.

Police responded to a call for an "active shooter" shortly before 7 pm at the retirement home. They found three bodies in a room, with a handgun near Richard Starry, said Lieutenant Enrique Paredez.

"At that time, the evidence indicates a murder-suicide," he said. "But the investigation is still premature to determine a pattern."

Ernest Starry was a resident of the retirement home, and Mrs. Montalvo was there to visit her husband, said Lieutenant Paredez. the police were alerted to two other deaths at the couple's home just down the street

The police found the bodies of the 13-year-old adopted son of the couple and the 41-year-old son of Ms. Montalvo, Lt. Paredez said. The authorities did not disclose their names.

The authorities estimate that both victims of the residence were killed before those of the retirement home.

"The night was long and morning," said Chief Flores. "We are doing our best with this horrible incident."

Robstown, located about 20 miles west of Corpus Christi, is a city of about 11,500 residents. According to the police, the retirement home is a for-profit senior care community, with approximately 94 beds.

"All members of the community and the surrounding area are heartbroken," said Mayor Amanda Barrera. "It will take a lot of time for our community to heal."
