US. Customs and Border Commissioner Kevin McAleenan on Wednesday described the boy's death as a "tragic death". The agency has ordered medical examinations of each child under 10 years of age under his care .
CBP published a chronology of events that would have followed the detention of Felipe and his father, Agustin Gomez, on December 18, near El Paso. Before dying Monday night, Felipe had spent a week in America.
On December 18
Felipe and his father were apprehended by border patrol officers near El Paso early in the afternoon for entering the United States illegally. In the evening, Felipe and his father were transferred to the port of entry of Paso del Norte.
According to CBP, the boy and his father received food and water.
December 20
After two days at the port of entry along the US-Mexico border, Felipe and his father were transferred to a border patrol post at El Paso. According to CBP, the Guatemalan child and his father received food and water.
December 22
Late at night, Felipe and his father were transferred to the Border Watch Station in Alamogordo, New Mexico, due to overcrowding. at the El Paso train station. The distance between the two stations is about 88 miles.
December 23
Felipe and his father arrived at the Alamogordo station early in the morning, according to CBP, who reportedly said he received food and hygiene products.
December 24

Later in the morning at 9:00 am, a CBP officer noticed that Felipe was coughing and seemed to have "bright eyes". Thirty minutes later, the Guatemalan was transferred to the Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, alongside his father. Hospital staff performed several streptococcal tests on Felipe, but diagnosed him with a cold and gave him Tylenol for the treatment of pain and fever, CBP said.
Felipe stayed in the hospital for later observation after finding a fever of 103 degrees. He was however released late in the afternoon and was prescribed antibiotics. CBP transported the 8-year-old son and his father to a border patrol checkpoint located on Highway 70, where agents offered them a hot meal and a dose of the prescribed medication to Felipe.
During the evening, Felipe had nausea and vomiting. CBP said Felipe's father had refused further medical attention because his son was feeling better. Late at night, around 22:00, the CBP said that Felipe looked nauseated and "lethargic" again. In the absence of EMT, the agents decided to transport Felipe and his father to the same hospital in Alamogordo.
On the way to the hospital, Felipe vomited and lost consciousness. Felipe, his father and a CBP officer arrived at the hospital shortly after 11 pm CBP said the hospital staff was not able to revive Felipe, who was pronounced dead at 11:48 pm
