According to the prosecutor's office, Iliescu's support at the time was supported by military measures. after the overthrow of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, which resulted in the death of more than 860 people. Iliescu, aged 88 in Ceausescu, was now minister, then head of the National Salvation Front. Before 1996, then between 2000 and 2004, Ion Iliescu held the post of President of Romania.

In addition to Iliescu, former Romanian Deputy Prime Minister Jelo Voikan-Voicuselka and three other defendants will appear in court. In his interview with Romanian television, Voicelesku asserted his innocence and qualified the entire trial for the act of political revenge.

In April, Ion Iliescu said that he was expecting a verdict "with a high head." The lawsuit against the former secretary of the central committee of the Romanian company Iliescu ended in 2015, but was reinstated by a decision of the court of cassation.
