The National Park Service announced Sunday that the Christmas tree would remain dark during the closure, which is expected to last a long time.
"During the closure of the federal government, the White House welcome center and the national Christmas tree site will be closed," says the announcement on the website of the NPS.

The partial closure "complicated efforts" to repair the damage, said a spokesman for the National Parks Service at WJLA.
