O Our culture and legal system strongly discouraged victims from reporting their sexual assault. According to the Ministry of Justice, rape is the least reported crime. The social mores that shame and blame the victims who reveal the truth certainly do not help that.
On the other hand, scorched earth campaigns, rare but disastrous, such as the infamous incident of Columbia's "Mattress Girl" and the raping hoax of Rolling Stone University's Virginia, corrode a culture in which women feel comfortable to manifest themselves. Whenever people discuss a manifestly false allegation of rape, a thousand victims receive no justice or worse, become the prey of the public, private investigators and powerful men who defend the bad guys.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing essentially became a civil referendum on whether or not he sexually assaulted Ford more than three decades ago. In the absence of any corroborating evidence, the Senate essentially voted on its innocence. Beyond any other criminal procedure, it's time for everyone to move on. Contrary to his fears that Kavanaugh's life would be "totally and permanently impaired," Kavanaugh should have the right to return to civil society as before.
Equally important, Christine Blasey Ford should be too.
Since the hearing, Ford had to move four times . She was forced to use a private security service and can not return to work. The public continued to harass and defame her. It's a blatant mistake of society.
Just as Kavanaugh's advocates claim that he is innocent on the basis of a lack of evidence, we can not say with relative certainty that Ford was deliberately lying. Sexual assault is notoriously difficult to prove. If we want a culture that encourages as many women as possible to make themselves known, we must respect the privacy of the accusers if their claims remain ultimately unproven.
Democrats who continue to play political football with Kavanaugh, even discussing his dismissal, do a disservice to the survivors. If Kavanaugh continues to be attacked on a large scale, it will reinforce the misconception that women can reject false claims and destroy the lives of innocent people.
And if the Conservatives continue to use Ford as an emotional punchbag, more women who fear lack of evidence against powerful men will remain silent.
Except in exceptional circumstances, Kavanaugh will never be charged by the Supreme Court. Unless there is extraordinary evidence, Ford's public career is over. Beating on the other side may seem cathartic, but this only further impedes the pursuit of our culture by justice. Both parties should call a detente and move on.
