LG's next flagship product has not yet been announced, but the company admits a source of information about it. Today, we know that the new hardware will actually call the G8 ThinQ and that it will include a reflection time sensor (ToF) in the front camera. (This probably explains the rendering engine on which two cameras are visible on the phone screen.)
These sensors reflect infrared waves from objects and can be used to recognize 3D shapes. The technology allows for secure unlocking of faces and a sharper background blur in portraits, and can potentially support RA applications.
The hardware is the Infineon REAL3 chip. LG does not say much about how it will be used in G8 software, but promises to provide "a new level of front camera capabilities on the smartphone."
LG is not the first to launch a ToF phone and probably we will see other similar news this year. HonorView 20, for example, will have this sensor in the back of the camera and VivoNexDualDisplayEdition will be able to use it for sephi photos as well as ordinary photos thanks to the unusual design of a dual screen phone. Sony has announced plans to increase the number of its own versions of the technology.
LG will officially unveil the G8 ThinQnaMWC in Barcelona at the end of the month. According to Rutoti, the novelty could have a second connected screen and a contactless gesture management interface.
