Cohen on Friday granted an interview to "Good Morning America" on ABC, in which he claimed that "of course," Trump knew that payments to actress Stormy Daniels adult film and model Karen McDougal was wrong.
Questioned by anchor George Stephanopoulos about Trump's assertion that he had not ordered his long-time lawyer to do something wrong, Cohen replied, " I do not think anyone believes it. "
Cohen also said that the payments, apparently intended to remove the charges of women they had business with the candidate of the time about ten years earlier and were forced to "help him and the countryside".
If Trump was really complicit in making covert payments to increase his chances of being elected, this would appear to be a criminal violation
Trump vigorously challenges this suggestion.
"I did not do anything wrong with the campaign finance laws, if they even apply, because it was not campaign finance." The President tweeted on Thursday. "Cohen was guilty of many charges unrelated to me, but he pleaded for two campaign charges that were not criminal."
Still, Trump had initially asserted that he had no knowledge of the payments made to women.
in his story – and Cohen's willingness to attack his former client in the media – creates real dangers for the administration. At a minimum, it keeps the spotlight on Trump's new explanations.

"It's now his word corroborated by others, including former friend David Pecker. Together, it's devastating.
Pecker is the president of American Media Inc. (AMI), publisher of the National Enquirer.
Prosecutors announced this week a non-enforcement agreement with AMI on payments to McDougal. NBC News reported on Thursday that Trump, Cohen and Pecker had discussed how the publisher could help stifle damaging stories about the future president in August 2015.
There is generally expectation that Cohen is giving more interviews to the media since he has not started his three year prison sentence before March.
The man who had once declared that he "would take a bullet" for Trump had completely turned against him and now seemed to see his way to redemption as one that involves a complete attack on Trump.
He also claims to have a higher purpose. In his interview with "Good Morning America," Cohen told Stephanopoulos that he hoped he "would remember history as contributing to the reconstruction of this country."
This kind of grandiosity does not work well with the aides and allies of the president. Deputy press officer Hogan Gidley told the White House Friday that the media "gave importance to a convicted felon" paying attention to Cohen.
Gidley added, "This is a self-admitted man." liar. You all know it. And what he's saying … I'm going to … stop lying from now on. " is a little silly. "
There are many Republicans outside the White House who are of the same opinion, claiming that the extent to which Cohen has changed His speech and the crimes for which he was convicted have Unbelievable.
"One of his crimes relates to taxi fraud, so how can you trust everything this guy says?" John Feehery, GOP's long-time strategist and also columnist for The Hill. "Yes, it hurts Trump because Trump hired him – but more [Cohen] will jabber on it, plus his credibility will be tarnished."
Other people loyal to President argue that appearances in Cohen's media have no real power, beyond the ability to excite the media and people who hate the president anyway.
"He will find plenty of people to who speak but at this point, these are just people who hate Trump who likes will have what it has to say, "said Barry Bennett, a key advisor of the president's 2016 campaign. "People who love Trump will think that they know why he says it."
For Bennett, Cohen's U-turn and his penchant for Trump's explosion came to him because he felt "jilted or otherwise".
Yet, Cohen's statements are such that the waters rise around Trump. His former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, should be sentenced soon. The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times both reported that prosecutors were considering funding for its inauguration in 2017; and special advocate Robert Mueller

In this context, even people who are sympathetic to the president think Cohen is an undesirable presence in the media landscape.
GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak said he did not consider Cohen "a particularly credible person".
But in spite of that, Mackowiak added, "I'm sure [the White House] would rather not do all that, it adds fuel to the fire and it's not what they need."
