Scientists showed a new picture of Mars and explained why one of the craters on the red planet "still carried" an ice cap.
The news of Ukraine is broadcast in the newspaper
. It shows a large crater of the red planet, covered with an ice cover. It is a crater of Koroleva, whose diameter is enormous 81.4 km
According to scientists, the crater contains an ice cap all year round. So, on Mars, as on Earth, there are seasons. However, the "cold trap", as scientists call the crater, is not subject to any climate change.
"The depth of the crater is greater than 2 km, with a water ice dome 1.8 km thick and up to 60 km in diameter from its foot. We are happy to receive this photo ", – noted in" Mars Express ".
According to preliminary data, the crater contains about 2,200 cubic kilometers of ice. However, scientists assume that it could act as swamp dust.
"When the air moves on the ice, it cools and stops above the crater. As a result, the crater protects itself from the warm air", – note the scientists.
By the way, the photo was taken with a high-resolution digital SLR camera (HRSC).
