President Donald Trump hailed the launch of the presidential campaign of Democratic Senator Kamala Harris, calling it the "best opening to date" of the 2020 primary race.
At a interview with the New York Times published Thursday night, Trump said Harris had "a better crowd, a better enthusiasm".
The president, who spent the latter part of his career in the entertainment industry before landing at the White House, particularly emphasized Harris's ability to attract a crowd, said the Times.
The President has often emphasized the size of his own campaign gatherings as a measure of his sympathy and success.
Trump claimed that some Democratic candidates had "really deviated from the far left" and took another shot at Massachusetts' Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, who set up an exploratory committee at the end of the month. December.
"I think Elizabeth Warren was very seriously hurt with the trap of Pocahontas," Trump would have said, referring to a racist speech that he frequently uses to insult his claim to have the Native American heritage. Despite an otherwise energetic launch, Harris's campaign faces headwinds on his California attorney record. Previously, she was a District Attorney in San Francisco and was criticized for her tough attitude to crime, including defending the death penalty in California.
Neither White House officials nor Harris's campaign responded immediately to INSIDER's request for comment on Thursday night.
