Donald John TrumpREAD: Transcript of James Comey's interview with House Republicans, Klobuchar, in 2020: "I think you want some Midwestern voices". Tuesday night signed an executive order that gives federal employees the day off Christmas Eve.
The order, which was posted online, indicates that federal government departments and agencies will be closed on December 24.
"All federal government departments and agencies will be closed and their employees exempt from service on Monday, December 24, 2018, the day before Christmas Day," the order states.
The Washington Post noted that federal employees had already been released on the Monday before Christmas. Former President George W. Bush issued an order similar to that of Trump in 2001 and 2007.
The former President Obama issued the same order in 2012. Obama also exempted federal employees from work on Boxing Day 2014, according to The Post. Christmas fell on a Thursday of this year.
The order specifies that certain workers may be called to report for work "for reasons of national security, defense or other compelling reasons". It also leaves to the heads of departments and executive bodies the power to decide whether the offices should remain open December 24.
The stoppage comes as federal employees face uncertainty because of the possibility that the government will close its doors this week. Congress must approve a budget for the government to remain open after Friday.
