Northam has been under fire for the past week after the public revealed a photo of its medical school directory showing two individuals in racist costumes – one in blackface and the other in Ku Klux Klan's outfit. . Northam first apologized and stated that he was one of the people in the photo but then retracted during a one – hour press conference, claiming that he was not in the picture.
The Associated Press first reported Northam's comments at a cabinet meeting. Although Northam defended himself at last Saturday's press conference, he also revealed that he had worn Blackface in another incident while he was playing Michael Jackson in a dance contest in the 1980s.
At last week's press conference, Northam reported that he was not planning to resign.
"I intend to continue to operate in Virginia," he said, adding that resignation would be the easiest solution.
"I could save myself on the difficult path ahead of us, I could avoid an honest conversation, harmful actions from my past," he said. "I can not, in all conscience, choose the path that would be easier for me to evade my responsibility to reconcile."
Last week's events also brought revelations about two potential Northam successors.
