Lucas Dowell was identified as the soldier who was shot during the raid and died later in the hospital. The suspect died at the scene of the incident.

State police said the authorities were executing a search warrant in a house when the shooting started. The raid was carried out by the regional working group on drugs and gangs in Piedmont, supported by a tactical team, the equivalent of a SWAT team.

The suspect, who was the only person in the house, also died. His identity has not been revealed yet.

No other soldiers were injured during the shooting, police said. Due to the Virginia State Police Policy, the two soldiers who fired their weapons "were put on administrative leave".
An investigation is ongoing on the incident.
