The National Weather Service has stated that these areas may display 2 to 4 inches snow, the strongest fall during the afternoon and evening; and that a "prolonged period of snow" that would last until Monday is to be expected, especially in northwestern North Carolina and southern Virginia.
This buildup will result in slippery conditions on snowy roads. Temperatures will remain below zero on Sunday night and travel will be difficult, warned the NWS.
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said the state of emergency will help agencies prepare for the storm that is expected to hit the southern part of the state hard.
