Actress Uma Thurman wrote a heartbreaking essay denouncing Texas’ new abortion ban, and she revealed her “darkest secret” to bolster her point.
The Supreme Court authorized the state’s six-week abortion ban to go into effect earlier this month. The law contains no exceptions for rape or incest, and private citizens are empowered to prosecute those who help someone get the process done.
The “Pulp Fiction” star wrote in the Washington Post on Tuesday that she felt compelled to share her own story on abortion “in the hopes of keeping the flames of the vulnerable women controversy over whom this law will take hold. an immediate effect … I feel it is my responsibility to put myself in their shoes.
Thurman said she was accidentally pregnant by a much older man when she was in her late teens. She discussed the options with her family and ultimately had an abortion by a compassionate German doctor.
“There is so much pain in this story,” she wrote. “This is my darkest secret so far. I’m 51 years old and I share it with you from the house where I raised my three children, who are my pride and joy. My life has been extraordinary. , sometimes filled with sorrow, challenge, loss and fear – just like the lives of so many women – but also marked, like theirs, by courage and compassion. I conceived my beautiful magical children with men whom I loved and whom I trusted enough to dare to bring a child into the world. I do not regret the road traveled. I applaud and support women who make a different choice. The abortion I had as a teenager was the most difficult decision of my life, one that caused me anguish back then and still saddens me today, but it was the path to the joyful and loving life that I lived. Choosing not to keep this early pregnancy allowed me to grow up to be the mother I wanted and needed to be.
