The Colorado Avalanche hopes that defenseman Cale Makar will be able to do for him what he has done for UMass this season.
The Avs on Sunday signed the Hobey Baker Award winner, and he will immediately join the team for his series against the Calgary Flames.
Colorado tied 1-1 in the series on Saturday night, while Calgary's Makar and the Minutemen lost 3-0 to Minnesota Duluth in the NCAA title game.

"This is a revolutionary type of player that has had a lasting impact on the UMass hockey program," said Avs General Manager, Joe Sakic, in a statement. "We are excited to see him join our team."
Makar, 20, who finished his second season, was the fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft, the highest selection in the history of UMass.
The Calgary native made a lot of history this season. He led UMass to his first top ranking at the first Frozen Four and was the first defenseman to lead Hockey East with 49 points in 40 games.
"I am very happy to start the next chapter of my hockey career," Makar said in a statement. "I can not wait to see what he has in store."
