* Spoilers for The Umbrellas Academy– TV series and comic to follow *
After ten episodes of death, destruction and dance mounts, Netflix The Umbrellas Academy went out with a bang. Like, the biggest possible bang literally: Despite the efforts of his super-power brother Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and number 5 (Aidan Gallagher), the latent power of Vanya (Ellen Page) brought about the end of the world via the explosion of the moon.
It's a great, senseless endingo a big crazy show, but it's a little different from the source material written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. In comics, Vanya plays a destructive "aftermath", but the brand new Umbrella Academy ends the end times. Talk to EW, showrunner Steve Blackman explained how the change had strengthened the idea of the imperfect meeting of this imperfect family.

Yeah, it ends horribly! What I really wanted to do is find a very good cliffhanger. I also thought that it was too easy for this family to come together in eight days and save the world. It must be more complicated than that. I wanted to have an end where they sort of reunited as a family, but they did not achieve the greatest goal of saving the world. If we have a second season, we'll see how they finish. These guys are not dead, but we do not know what's going on. I thought that said a lot about who this family was, that is, they could not understand everything. Their wonderfully dysfunctional family could not quite win the day. I thought it was very talkative for the season.
I wrote last week about how on-screen comic book changes have strengthened the story. But one of the most important gaps is the replacement of the madness of the comic, extremely conductor whirling mustache with John Magaro& # 39; s modest Leonard Peabody. Blackman explained:

I wanted to get away from the conductor, because that was too much trope. It was a character so mean, almost with a whirling mustache. It worked in comics, but I needed someone who psychologically manipulated Vanya rather than physically changing her. The idea was therefore to give him a love interest. What was wrong with him was that he read this newspaper and that he knows all the secrets of the family. He approaches Vanya thinking that she is the weak link to pursue them. He unleashes the monster somehow without realizing it.

He does it well, I quickly understood with him and Ellen that we had slowly peeled the onion in this story. He handles it with every beat, but you can get it, given who is Vanya. He holds it together until the end, but his hatred spreads and he spills the beans too early. But he does it almost with her! Once in his bathtub, he forced her to comply and she will do what he says.
