UNC-Charleston: Roy Williams post-game

CHAPEL HILL, NC — North Carolina claimed its first victory of the 2020-21 college basketball season over the College of Charleston, 79-60, on Wednesday night.

The Cougars came back from a 14-point deficit and took the lead, 43-42, with 15 minutes left. UNC’s shrinking size and impressive play from its young freshmen proved too important, however, as the Tar Heels chained 17-0 to take the lead and put the opener in the season.

Caleb Love and RJ Davis became the first pair of freshman guards to start a game for UNC since Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington did so in 2007. Love led all scorers with 17 points. He shot 4 for 11 from the ground and 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Davis added 11 points on the 4-for-9 shot.

The freshmen spoke up ahead of the returning Tar Heels, 50-29. Day’Ron Sharpe notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, five of which were offensive boards. Garrison Brooks had a low scoring night (six points) but helped with his defense (two blocks) and rebounds (11 rebounds, a team high).
