UNC-Virginia Tech: Roy Williams’ postgame

GREENSBORO, NC – North Carolina turned a three-point halftime deficit into an 81-73 victory over Virginia Tech in the ACC tournament quarterfinals. The Hokies came out with extreme physique that seemed to knock out the Tar Heels early on, holding them to two offensive rebounds and leading to eight turnovers in the first half.

Armando Bacot, who was affected by Tech’s physicality in the first half, came out in the final 20 minutes with increased aggression. He scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and caught five offensive rebounds. He finished with 17 points on 7 of 9 shots with 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double and third in the last four games.

The other part of Tech’s defensive plan closed on Kerwin Walton on the perimeter. The only open gazes he could find were in transition. In the half court, UNC couldn’t find it open for an easy look. It opened the door for RJ Davis and the first-year point guard took full advantage. He posted a season high of 19 points on 6 of 10 shots with four three runs scored, which is also a season high.

The streak that saw UNC pull out was a three-point play, followed by a robbery of Davis of Tech’s Hunter Cattoor, and then converting to a three-point play. This gave the Tar Heels a 56-49 lead with 9:46 to go. Davis’ final shot from across the arc gave UNC an 11-point lead with 1:08 remaining.

UNC head coach Roy Williams topped Bob Knight on the all-time win list (903). Read and watch everything the Hall of Fame head coach had to say to members of the media after the win:
