Graduate classmates stood up and applauded when Houpt, a 23-year-old girl from Charlotte, was called to the stage.
"Emily, we are so happy that you are here today to receive official recognition of your hard work in international studies and your contribution to the academic community," said Joan Lorden, Vice Chancellor and Vice Chancellor responsible for academic affairs.
Twenty-three members of Howell's family attended the ceremony where the school awarded him a Bachelor of Arts degree in memory. Parlier will also receive a diploma in memoriam, officials said.
In addition to Houpt, three other students were injured. They are Rami Al-Ramadhan, 20, from Saihat, Saudi Arabia; Sean DeHart, 20, from Apex, North Carolina; and Drew Pescaro, 19, also from Apex.
"Starting today, each scholarship will allow the spirit and legacy of each of these young men to always be present on our campus," Dubois said. .
According to Dubois, an "initially teaching" couple financed the scholarships with a million dollars.
