Police charged 22-year-old Trystan Terrell with two counts of murder and other charges for allegedly shooting two students and killing four others and wounding four others at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. After the shot began around 17:40. On Tuesday, the entire UNC campus in Charlotte was locked up.
The sophomore Tristan Field, who told CBS News that he was in the classroom where the shootings unfolded, said the scene had gone from confusion to chaos in seconds. Field thinks the shooter sits with the other students for about 10 minutes before opening fire, reports CBS News' Chip Reid.
"Suddenly, without warning, no one shouted, nothing, this gun started to ring," Field said.
He added that no less than 50 students had tried to go out through one of the two doors of the room.
"It was absolute panic: a chair fell in front of the door and people stumbled over it, for example trying to climb on it," Field said. "Some people have fallen in. It was like the water was going through a funnel, but it was not fast enough."
The authorities have not yet identified the two people who were killed. The shooting took place on the last day of classes.
A father in a nearby building filmed a video showing a victim apparently transported to safety and said he saw the students running away.
"They came out of the building by flying, jumping the brick wall and running in different ways," said Chris Neal.
The student newspaper identified one of the four wounded as their sports journalist, Drew Pescaro, who was not operated and who is in stable condition. The forces of order were nearby to prepare a concert on campus and arrested the alleged gunman before leaving the classroom.
"We were able to get to the building and … our officer immediately went to the suspect's house to get him off," said UNC chief of police Charlotte, Jeff. Baker.
Terrell was charged with two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder. Officials say that they have still not received any motive for the shooting.
All final exams were canceled here throughout the weekend. The governor promises reforms to keep firearms off campuses of the state and ensure student safety.
