For the fourth time, Sony's Uncharted movie is looking for a new director. Director Dan Trachtenberg, who was appointed in January 2019 following the resignation of Director Shawn Levy, left the project.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is already looking for Trachtenberg 's replacement and plans to recruit a new filmmaker by the end of September. Tom Holland is still attached to the star in the role of Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake – although it is a younger and less experienced version of the video game character. Production of the film Uncharted is expected to begin in early 2020.
This is the second time in as many days as problems arise in a large Sony project associated with Holland. Disney and Sony have reached a stalemate on the Spider-Man movie franchise, resulting in the removal of Marvel Studios' head Kevin Feige from future Spidey movies. It remains to be seen whether Holland's Spider-Man will remain in the MCU, although the wording used to describe Disney's break-up and Sony's partnership seems to imply that this will not be the case. Given the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it will be interesting to see how the MCU could be restructured if Holland's withdrawal actually occurs.
Before Levy, Seth Gordon of the King of Kong had been hired as director for Uncharted. Neil Burger of Limitless and David O. Russell of Silver Linings Playbook have also been at the helm of Uncharted at some point. Like the director's chair, the pen behind the screenplay has also changed hands several times. The first draft was written by Joe Carnahan of Team A, but his rough draft was replaced by a memoir from the author of Shield's agents, Rafe Judkins. This project did not survive long either, being replaced by another written jointly by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker.
