It was a tough game for Team Fluff.

2021 Puppy Bowl winners have their coveted Lombarky Trophy: Team Ruff, the underdogs after back-to-back wins for opponent Team Fluff, have won the 17th annual Adoptable Puppies and Dogs Game.

Seventy dogs took part in this year’s ‘cutest game ever’, taken over by longtime ‘thief’ Dan Schachner.

Here’s a leg-for-leg recap of the captivating growl.

Team Archer Ruff, an American Staffordshire Terrier, started the game madly with a penalty for “illegal use of goal posts” – ripping the opposing team’s goal post.

Ruff’s Muffin, a terrier mix, scored the team’s first touchdown after a fierce tackle from the hearing-impaired Marshall Terrier – who is training to be a support puppy for nurses on the front lines of the COVID pandemic and has been l one of the first contenders for Most Valuable Pup.

Meanwhile, Chow Chow mix Chunky Monkey was sanctioned for “excessive sleep” after his nap on the sidelines. Cute, but no cigar. Still, Twitter went wild with the most valuable humor served by the Chunk himself.

Later in the first quarter, a brutal standoff ensued between Muffin and Marshall as the nervous Nelly Gus of Team Fluff needed a little ‘puppy’ to get her head in the game. . Alas, Marshall crossed the goal line for Team Fluff’s first touchdown. Very Good Boy Milky Way also added to Fluff’s first quarter countdown. Paulie, a bit naughty of a mix, barked right away, winning a touchdown for Team Ruff. His teammate Mix Hashbrown equalized the game 21-21 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Great Pyrenees Duke mix was fooled by Team Fluff’s steadfast attack, giving golden retriever Beliveau the opening of a touchdown, taking his team to 35-21 after another TD from the Sonic terrier-bulldog mix.

Ruff’s Fletcher, a hearing-impaired beagle mix, scored another jubilant touchdown, with Ruff’s first basket scored by Tank, an adorable Rottweiler / boxer, at the end of the first half. Team Fluff remained the top dawgs, not thanks to Erica de Fluff, a border collie mix who chose to relax in a nice quiet corner of the stadium.

The puppies rested during the halftime show, performed by a very energized group of kittens, led by DJ Grand Master Scratch on the decks.

At the start of the third quarter, Team Fluff’s energy ball Fozzie was hit with a penalty for “cringing the puppy”. But the Norwegian Elkhound mix still looked like it was flying – thanks to special grooming at Harlem’s Doggie Day Spa ahead of the big event. Later, Ruff’s Apollo gave Dwight a clear path to the end zone, giving Ruff a three-point lead. The victory didn’t last long, when Fluff’s Béliveau scored again after a fairly aggressive tackle in the water bowl at Tank’s expense.

In the final quarter, crowd favorite Jett – a two-legged lab with his own wheeled cart – made his doggie debut and scored a touchdown for Team Fluff, thanks to help from the lab / mix. Jay terrier.

American Staffordshire Terrier / Dutch Shepherd Paulie joined Team Ruff’s two-touchdown club, but the team couldn’t keep up with the good boys. Béliveau – who frankly looked a bit fat for a puppy – scored his fourth touchdown for Fluff.

Making the game a real paw-biteer, Muffin scored another touchdown for Ruff, bringing the score to 66-69 with less than a minute to go.

But Team Ruff made their way to a victory for Team Ruff thanks to Big Boss Paulie of New York. Following back-to-back wins for Team Fluff over the past few years, Team Ruff barked their way to legend with a final score of 73-69.

Let’s not forget that the game’s MVP – Marshall, our hard of hearing Boston Terrier – grabbed the esteemed title. Extra goodies for Marshall!

The big match was joined by a lineup of famous animal lovers: it was hosted by best friends Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg, who set the table for snacks and drinks in the tail – DO-double-G, well sure, brought the gin and juice. .

First Lady Jill Biden was joined by her German Shepherds Rescue Champ and Major Biden, delivered a public service announcement about dog adoption – and also wearing masks. Actress Kristen Bell joined in on the action, cheering on the rescue puppy Java for a day.

But the real winners of the game were the 70 families who brought back champions after the Puppy Bowl – according to Animal Planet, every last of the dogs from each Puppy Bowl is adopted by the time the show airs.
