According to a new report, Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke and his wife, Amy, reportedly underpaid for two years.
The couple seems to have underpaid its 2013 and 2014 taxes of more than $ 4,000 because it made a mistake in the way it declared its medical expenses, according to an accountant who reviewed the Wall Street Journal's statements .
O'Rourke and his wife, who issued their tax returns on Monday, made medical deductions that were only allowed for medical and dental expenses of more than 10% of the income of people of their age. Their taxable income would have increased if they had not taken nearly $ 16,000 in deductions.
"After reading this error, the accounting firm that prepared the filings was immediately informed and will file an amendment, if any," said an O'Rourke employee.
O'Rourke was a member of the Texas Congress for most of 2013 and 2014.
The 2013 tax year was the first to have different income limits for the deduction of medical expenses. These limits were based on the taxpayer's age. If a tax preparer did not indicate the age of his client when deducting it, the tax calculation software automatically made the full deduction, said Tony Nitti, an accountant at RubinBrown LLP, on the Wall Street Journal. .
Nitti said he made the same mistake in those years.
Many of the 2020 Democrats have voluntarily released years of their tax returns in recent weeks, allowing the public to look into the details. Congressional Democrats lobbied President Trump to publish his own financial documents, but he opposed it, breaking with a long tradition of presidents and candidates releasing their tax returns.
