Unemployment benefits: 712,000 more Americans filed for unemployment last week

It was a little lower the week before, which has been revised upwards.

Meanwhile, 288,701 workers have applied for benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program, which provides assistance to workers such as the self-employed and entrepreneurs. This number is not adjusted for seasonality.

Together, 1 million Americans filed initial claims for benefits on an unadjusted basis last week.

Continuing jobless claims stood at 5.5 million.

Thursday’s report comes just days after the United States Government Accountability Office said the Department of Labor had failed to provide an accurate estimate of the number of Americans claiming benefits. The backlog of states is overwhelmed by the historically high number of nominations, which contributes to this problem.

On top of that, millions of people may not receive all of the unemployment benefits owed to them, GAO said.

Economists and lawmakers have relied on data on jobless claims throughout the pandemic because its weekly release schedule is closest to real-time economic data.

This is a developing story. It will be updated
