Union County teacher mourns loss of deceased husband from COVID-19 – WSOC TV

UNION COUNTY, NC – Lisa Anthony is a grade eight math teacher at East Union Middle School, where masks are optional in the classroom.

Anthony and her husband contracted COVID-19 the same day.

Her husband died at the end of September. The day of her funeral was October 4, which would have been the couple’s 18th wedding anniversary.

“He said, ‘My sweet beautiful, woman. I’m sorry things had to end this way, ”Anthony told Channel 9 on Friday. “My husband was the nicest person ever. “

Anthony said that while she cannot prove where they contracted the virus, she believes the school district is being negligent in not requiring masks. Others at her husband’s work did not wear masks either.

She thinks the mask warrants would have made a difference.

“I just feel like the Union County School Board, they really just dropped the ball,” Anthony said.

Anthony is vaccinated, but not her husband.

She said he hesitated despite her pleas for the vaccine.

“I tried to convince him over and over again,” Anthony said. “I said, ‘It’s not fair to me’. “

She said after he got sick he kept saying he should have been vaccinated.

Anthony took time off from teaching and said she felt lost now.

“We had so many plans and things we were going to do together,” she said.

The couple also obtained COVID-19 shortly after the district changed its contract finding protocols and allowed the return of the quarantined students.

The district relies on the health service to contract tracing and notify exposures.
