United Airlines investigates source of leaks on Ted Cruz flights to Cancun

United Airlines has launched an investigation into the source of the leaks during GOP Senator Ted Cruz’s controversial trip to Cancun, Mexico, as fellow Texans trembled – and died – without power amid plunging temperatures.

But the head of the flight attendants union has urged United to drop it.

“It is against United’s policy to share personal information about our customers and we are investigating this incident,” the airline said in a statement to Politico, which first reported the investigation.

An airline executive told Politico he was not yet certain what action the company would take if the leak (s) were discovered, but that “no options are off the table “. Thousands of employees potentially have access to consumer theft information.

Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA), defended the leak and urged United in a tweet to drop the investigation. She said that Cruz was not just any “client”, but an “official who had lied too much”.

She added: “Hey United, #WeAreAllTheLeak.”

Cruz’s callous getaway to Cancun with his family and friends exploded in the media after photos of him boarding a flight to the sun surfaced on Wednesday.

He first lied that he was just a “good father” and escorted his daughters to Mexico, and returned the next day. But Cruz had initially planned to stay in for the weekend, according to flight bookings revealed in the press, and apparently switched to dodging severe attacks. He eventually admitted that he had planned to stay for days and that the trip was “obviously a mistake”.

United had far greater concerns on Saturday as a flight from Denver to Hawaii lost use of an engine shortly after takeoff and rained plane debris on the ground below. The Boeing 777-200 quickly returned to safety at Denver International Airport and no one on the flight – or on the ground – was injured.
