HONOLULU (KHON2) – A United Airlines plane returned to Honolulu after its passengers reported that one of its engines had caught fire. There were 142 passengers on board. The early morning flight was to Majuro, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The flight lasts approximately five hours above free water.

A passenger sent us a video and you could see the flames rising from the left wing. It's a show you'll never want to see in flight.

"The fire and the smoke were coming out from behind for a few seconds, like two fire spurs," said passenger Josh Ley.

Ley says that he was sitting in a window seat behind the left wing when he took the video.

"Then you know we were staying at the same altitude, circling the city almost an hour before landing again, it was about an hour trying to figure out what was going on", did he declare.

Ley says that an announcement was made saying that one of the engine's compressors had broken down.
United Airlines tells us that flight 132 returned to Honolulu soon after takeoff as a result of a mechanical incident on one of the engines.
The plane landed safely and the 142 passengers were greeted by rescue teams.

"They checked the plane to make sure we were safe to get to the door, they had to cool down the breaks," said Ley. "They gave us the green light to come back to the door, we waited at the door for a while, and finally we were informed that our flight had been canceled."

Some passengers have been booked again on other flights. Others tell us that it may be necessary to wait until the end of the week to travel to Majuro.

"They put me in a hotel with taxi and food coupons, and they reported me to Friday," Ley said.

Passengers tell us that there are not many flights to Majuro and this is probably the reason why waiting to change reservations takes some time. United Airlines tells us that the plane with the engine problem is now out of order.
