United Airlines plans to launch the first non-stop service between the United States and Cape Town, South Africa, subject to government approval.

The airline plans to operate three weekly flights between New York's Newark Liberty International Airport and the Cape Town International Airport, as of December 2019.

United has announced that it will use the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner with a total of 252 seats on the seasonal route, which will be the airline's first connection to the African continent. The carrier's fleet of nearly 800 aircraft includes 25 Boeing 787-9 and 12 787-8, and 7 787-10, of which United became the first US carrier in November 2018.

At present, Cape Town Airport does not offer direct flights to the United States. The proposed route mainly includes destinations in Southern Africa, as well as a number of long-haul flights to Europe and the Middle East.

Johannesburg, home to South Africa's largest airport with 21 million annual passengers, offers two direct flights to the United States. South African Airways (SAA), a Star Alliance partner for United Airlines, to New York JFK, and a Delta Air Lines connection from Hartsfield – Jackson Atlanta International Airport, operate daily.
