Alex Morgan scored five goals as the United States opened their Women's World Cup campaign with a 13-0 win against Thailand in Group F on Tuesday in Reims, France.

Pre-tournament favorites and reigning champions made their way to Thailand in the opening minutes, with Morgan's goal offside after 10 minutes.

A few minutes later, Morgan's second attack came up when she found space between two Thai defenders and headed for a Kelley O Hara center to allow the United States to climb 1-0.

Rose Lavelle doubled the lead of the Americans before the 20-minute mark, picking up the ball just behind the offensive third, coming to the top of the box and beating Sukanya Chor Charoenying, guardian of Thailand.

A shot on goal led the third goal of the United States just 30 minutes, while Lindsey Horan hit his point-blank shot on the roof of the net. Thailand was lucky not to concede more before the break, as Jill Ellis' team continued to dominate the match and keep up the pressure on their opponents.

"We really got into this game and we really wanted to introduce ourselves, as well as what we are getting ready for and what we are working on," Morgan said after the match. "I think that's what we did – every goal counts in this tournament and that's what we were working on."

The United States resumed its pace in the first half after the break, scoring four goals in just over 10 minutes.

Sam Mewis, who started in midfield after a Becky Sauerbrunn injury, started in the 50th minute, before Morgan and Lavelle added their second goal and Julie Ertz scored a goal at 7-0.

Morgan finished third and fourth as the match approached full-time, and Megan Rapinoe added another in the counterattack for the United States to go up 10-0.

Substitute Mallory Pugh then scored 11-0 and Morgan added her fifth goal of the night to join compatriot Michelle Akers as the only woman to have scored five goals in a single World Cup game.

Veteran Carli Lloyd then added a 13th goal of the night in the US to reach the final score and give the Americans a record of victory and goals, surpassing Germany, who beat Argentina 11-0 in 2007.

Thailand, ranked No. 34 in the world, was clearly surpassed even though the team made progress on the world stage. Making her World Cup debut in 2015 four years ago, Thailand finished third in her group but earned her first win, a 3-2 victory over Cote d 'Ivoire.

At the final whistle, Lloyd and Christian Press were seen comforting the Thai keeper. Morgan put his arm around an opponent who was wiping his tears on the ground a few moments after the final whistle.

The American group, who had 39-2 to take advantage at 6-0-2 World Cup opening, will face Chile before playing against Sweden in his last match before the start of the round of 16 .

Sweden, which defeated Chile 2-0 earlier in Rennes on Tuesday, ousted the United States from the last team event in the quarter-finals of the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
