In recent years, a handful of alternatives to Apple TV’s controversial Siri Remote have surfaced. The latest comes from Universal Electronics, and it ditches the touchpad design by favoring more traditional buttons, as well as Bluetooth connectivity.
In a press release, the company announced its new Apple TV remote designed for cable companies. It has physical buttons for things like volume control, program guides, channel skipping, fast forward and rewind. Instead of a touchpad, it has physical controls for moving around the tvOS interface.
Two things help set the Universal Electronics Remote Control for Apple TV apart from other third-party alternatives: Bluetooth connectivity and a dedicated button for Siri control.
Unfortunately, the Universal Electronics remote control for Apple TV doesn’t appear to be widely available to consumers. Instead, the company plans to sell branded versions of the remote to cable companies that include Apple TV as a set-top box option for customers. That’s why the Universal Electronics Remote Control for Apple TV emphasizes live TV with a dedicated program guide and channel buttons.
Universal says cable companies or multichannel video distributors that offer Apple TV 4K can begin placing orders for the remote at the end of December. Companies will be able to present the new remote with Apple TV 4K subject to their individual deployment plans.

Rumors currently suggest that the next version of Apple TV will include a new Siri remote that could address some of the concerns of the current iteration.
