Universal’s “ Dear Evan Hansen ” hits theaters in September

“Dear Evan Hansen,” the film adaptation of Universal of the Broadway musical, will be released on September 24, the studio announced on Friday.

Ben Platt will reprise his winning role as Tony in the upcoming adaptation. He will be joined in the film by Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams and Julianne Moore, who will play Evan de Platt’s mother, Heidi Hansen.

“Dear Evan Hansen” is the story of a high school student who suffers from severe social anxiety and struggles to connect with others and make friends. After a classmate commits suicide, Evan gets caught up in a lie that brings him closer to his classmate’s family. Kaitlyn Dever, Colton Ryan, Danny Pino and Nik Dodani are also featured in the film.

Stephen Chbosky (“Wonder”, “The Benefits of Being a Wallflower”) directs “Dear Evan Hansen”. Steven Levenson, who wrote the book of the musical, wrote the screenplay. Marc Platt (“La La Land”) and Adam Siegel will produce for their universal brand Marc Platt Productions. The film adaptation will also feature Grammy Award-winning songs including “You Will Be Found”, “Waving Through a Window”, “For Forever” and “Words Fail”.

Universal’s senior vice president of production, Sara Scott, and director of development, Lexi Barta, will oversee production on behalf of the studio.
